Seashore Color Bands, Iceland

In the south of Iceland, black beaches are common, often stretching as far as you can see. Hiking among the high hills and cliffs that overlook the water, we came upon these four crisply defined bands of color — green hill, black beach, blue-teal sea, white sky — cut through by one of Iceland’s many rivers. The river’s sinuous path through the stark black sand raises the levels of contrast of both form and color. Note: At a detail level, this image is rendered in a grainy, Impressionist fashion.

• Native aspect ratio is 1.8:1, meaning that a custom print is necessary to include the whole of the image. That said, a standard 2:1 ratio crops from the bottom only a band about the size of the sky at the top, and the image retains most of its sense and impact. Thus, a custom 1.8:1 print is good, and also possible are print sizes such as 20x10 inches, 24x12, 36x18, and 44x22.
